![]() In 1971, changed its name to Marcopolo SA Carrocerias e Ônibus. In 1969, the company acquired Carrocerias Eliziário, from Porto Alegre. The success was so great that the name became the company’s corporate name. In the road, toilet and bed car versions, the bus was named Marcopolo, in honor of the famous Venetian traveler. The powerful bus – the engine had 200 HP – would forever mark the history of the factory. In 1968, Nicola SA presented the country’s first monoblock bus, mounted on the Mercedes Benz O.326 platform. In the first years, exports to Uruguay started. The 1960s were very important for the company. In order not to paralyze the production line, Nicola & Cia went public and formed a corporation. Near the end of the construction, the company’s liquidity ended. The land was ceded by the owner of the area in order to encourage the occupation of the region. In 1957, the Nicola brothers began to erect the second headquarters, with 3,100 m², in the newly divided Planalto neighborhood. In the first decade of life, around 600 units were produced. Ī few years later, the two-story, 290 m² pavilion could no longer support the increased production demand. In 1952, the first metallic body was produced and then the first chassis manufactured in Brazil. The vehicle gave rise to a series, produced at the request of Transporte Pérola. The body was made of wood, on an aluminum structure, which took three months to be completed, since it was all assembled manually. ![]() Still in 1949, the company produced its first bus. In 6 of August of 1949, the brothers Nicola – Dorval Anthony Nelson, and John Doracy Luiz – opened the doors of Nicola & Cia, a small workshop chapeação and painting truck cabs. It has factories in the American, African and Asian continents. It has 10 factories spread all over the world and its buses are present in more than 100 countries. GB Auto an Egyptian group, leading player in the automotive segment has entered an agreement to establish a bus body manufacturing facility in Suez- Egypt, with Marcopolo Brazilian base, leading global bus body manufacturer. GB Polo will make use of the new chassis to serve both local and export markets. Most recently, Ghabbour Auto has signed an agreement to serve as the exclusive distributor in Egypt for Iveco Irisbus. ![]() ![]() The partnership has built an 8,000 unit-per-year capacity bus body assembly facility in Suez targeting local and export markets and is a move to capture export opportunities in commercial vehicle manufacturing by leveraging Ghabbour Auto’s quality standards and low-cost, highly-trained workforce.
